Tehran — In a dramatic escalation of regional tensions Monday, the Islamic Republic of Iran formally invoked the rarely-used "triple-dog blockade" clause to impose a third simultaneous blockade on the Strait of Hormuz, a 21-mile-wide chokepoint that handles approximately 20% of the world's oil supply and, as of press time, approximately 0% of anything.
The move comes in direct response to the United States, which had earlier imposed what naval analysts described as a "double-dog blockade" — two overlapping carrier group interdiction zones that the Pentagon characterized as "a layered deterrence posture" and that Iran characterized as "asking for it."
"The American double blockade was a cowardly and aggressive move against our Godly nation," Iranian state media quoted a senior naval commander as saying. "But the triple-dog blockade supersedes it. Everyone knows this. You cannot un-triple-dog-blockade."
U.S. Fifth Fleet officials confirmed they were aware of the escalation but were currently consulting legal counsel to determine whether a "quadruple-dog blockade" was achievable with existing carrier group assets, or whether Congress would need to authorize additional blockades.
Pakistan Proposes Joint Blockade in Peace Gesture
In what Islamabad described as "a bold vision for wartime unity," Pakistan's foreign ministry proposed that the United States and Iran resolve their differences by operating the blockade together as a joint military venture, tentatively named the "Big Beautiful Blockade."
"Both nations clearly want to block the Strait," said Pakistan's Foreign Minister in a statement released Sunday. "We propose they honor that shared value. A joint blockade, co-administered, preventing passage to all vessels, aircraft, marine mammals, and migratory birds. Peace through unity of purpose."
A hawksbill sea turtle attempting to transit from the Gulf of Oman was reportedly turned back by both fleets simultaneously and issued conflicting paperwork. It is now in a holding pattern approximately four nautical miles south of the blockade line and is described by maritime observers as "visibly uncertain."
Oil Markets React; Russia Says Nothing, Smiles
Crude oil futures surged 34% in overnight trading as markets processed the news that the world's most critical maritime chokepoint was now blocked in three directions, a geometrical achievement analysts described as "technically impressive for a two-dimensional waterway."
In Moscow, the Kremlin made no public statement. Sources described the prevailing mood there as "quietly excellent." Russia's sovereign wealth fund reportedly bought a boat.
"We have said many times that stability in the region is important," the Kremlin spokesperson told reporters, audibly suppressing something.
Reaction From the International Community
The International Maritime Organization issued guidance reminding all parties that the triple-dog blockade, while culturally significant, does not appear in UNCLOS and carries no force under international maritime law. Iran responded by citing the 1983 film A Christmas Story as a secondary legal source. The IMO noted that the film is set in Ohio and concerns a BB gun.
The European Union issued a statement of "grave concern" that ran to four pages and proposed a task force. The task force is expected to issue a preliminary report by 2028. The blockade is not expected to wait.
Representatives of the global petroleum industry were reached for comment at what sources described as an ongoing celebration involving champagne, a live rock band, and a banner reading WE DID NOT DO THIS. A spokesperson, audible over what appeared to be guitar feedback, issued the following statement: "$250 per barrel, baby!!" The spokesperson then attempted a drunken backflip.
At press time, Iran had not specified what a quintuple-dog blockade would entail, but naval analysts described the escalation ladder as "conceptually unbounded."
Satyr Satire reached out to the mostly internet comments for comment. The hawksbill sea turtle declined to comment because it was holding its breath. All others denied the situation ever happened if they are going to get in trouble over it.
