Satyr Satire Requests Reader Support, Cites Ongoing Costs

Publication acknowledges it has "several recurring expenses" and "a general preference for continuing to exist."

Satyr Satire, the award-eligible satirical news organization covering developments in artificial intelligence, technology, and related human suffering, announced today that it requires money in order to keep operating.

The publication, which has never been profitable, noted that this is not a new situation, and that it does not expect the situation to change in any fundamental way. "We are aware that many publications have monetised themselves through advertising, sponsorship, and in several documented cases, venture capital," a statement from the editorial board read. "We have pursued a strategy of not doing that."

"We would like to continue publishing. We cannot continue publishing for free indefinitely. These two facts are in tension. We are asking you to resolve that tension on our behalf." — The Editorial Board, Satyr Satire, re: the current situation

The publication accepts donations exclusively in Monero (XMR), a privacy-preserving cryptocurrency. The decision was described internally as "ideologically consistent" and "mildly inconvenient for everyone involved, including us."

No minimum donation amount has been specified. No maximum has been set either, though the editorial board acknowledged it would be "surprised" if either limit were tested.

Monero is private by default — your donation is not traceable on-chain.

Donations will be used to offset hosting costs, domain registration, and the continued availability of the editorial staff, who have other options but have not exercised them yet. The publication has pledged to remain editorially independent regardless of donation volume, a pledge it acknowledges is easier to make when donations are low.

Readers who prefer not to donate are thanked for their continued readership, which the publication values greatly while acknowledging it cannot pay for things with it.
